This research study investigated the prevalence of neuropsychological impairment in offenders charged with or convicted of a death penalty crime in relation to closed head injured and toxic exposed groups. The study was comprised of previously collected data that included the Halstead Reitan Neuropsychological Test Battery, the Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-Revised, the Wisconsin Card Sorting Test, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2 and the Rey 15-Item Memory Test. A total of 115 male participants between the ages of 17 and 50 were included in this study. Based on the reason for referral, participants were categorized into three groups: closed head injured (n = 52), toxic exposed (n = 30) and death penalty offenders (n = 33). Descriptive analysis revealed the majority of the death penalty offenders demonstrated mild impairment to average levels of global neuropsychological functioning using Heaton T-score conversions on the Halstead Impairment Index and Average Impairment Index. However, the majority of death penalty offenders displayed mild to moderate neuropsychological impairment on the General Neuropsychological Deficit Scale. The majority of offenders obtained scores within the mildly impaired to average range of neuropsychological functioning across all measures assessing executive function and expressive-receptive language deficits. One-way ANOVAs revealed that the death penalty offender group performed better on the neuropsychological tests than the closed head injured group ( p < 0.05). No significant differences existed between the toxic exposed and the death penalty offender subgroups. Additionally, a qualitative exploration found that death penalty offenders shared prominent familial and environmental risk characteristics, which may have hindered normal cortical growth. The results of this study indicate that neuropsychological impairment alone does not appear to result in the manifestation of lethal violence. Rather, it is likely to be the result of a culmination of interacting neuropsychological, psychological, environmental and biological risk characteristics.
