This study investigated the relationship between personality characteristics and suicidal behavior (suicidality) of incarcerated adolescent males. The goal of this study is to aid in the determination of accurate assessment and clinical considerations for each adolescent. This was done by determining if there was a relationship between scores on the Suicide Probability Scale (SPS) and scores on the Millon Adolescent Clinical Inventory (MALI). An examination of 152 master files was completed on 13--19 year old males, who were processed through the Illinois Youth Center - St. Charles Reception & Classification Center (R&C) between January 1, 2002 and February 28, 2002. Demographic information, SPS scores, and MACI scores were taken from each file and statistical analysis was done to determine if correlations exist. The statistical analysis included discriminant function analysis and linear regression. Group membership was found to exist between SPS scores and several MACI scales. The percentage of cases correctly classified with the MACI Introversion scale (scale 1) was 67.1%, MACI Inhibited scale (scale 2a) was 68.4%, MACI Doleful scale (scale 2b) was 67.8%, and all three MACI scales (1, 2a, 2b) was 68.4%. Correlations were also found to exist between SPS scores and the MACI Suicidal Tendency Scale (scale GG) (r = .703, p = .00). The implications of these findings suggest that selected MACI scales may be helpful in identifying suicidality among incarcerated adolescent males when used in conjunction with the SPS and that, once determined, consideration should be given as to how to appropriately plan for and facilitate the safety of the adolescent.
