Previous research has suggested that the ground surface and other environmental surfaces provide a reference frame for perceiving distance. This raises the issue of how distance perception is influenced by changes in surface properties, such as texture or curvature. The purpose of the experiments reported here is to examine the effects of curved surface regions and continuity of surface texture on perceived distance.

In the first series of experiments, observers viewed a simulated ground surface extending in depth, and judged the size of a depth interval between two objects on the surface. Surfaces were either uniformly textured or comprised two distinct regions. The texture discontinuity was produced by using different textures, the same texture reversed in contrast, or the same texture shifted horizontally. In all cases, less distance was judged on discontinuously textured surfaces than on continuously textured surfaces.

In the second series, observers viewed a frontoparallel surface, and judged the size of a frontal interval. Again, discontinuous texture produced a reduction in judged distance. Judged distance was further reduced by the addition of a second discontinuity. More salient discontinuities produced greater reductions in judged distance, and intervals adjacent to a single discontinuous line were judged smaller than intervals adjacent to a single continuous line.

In the third series, observers viewed textured surfaces that were either completely planar or contained a curved region. The curved region comprised either a convex bump or a concave depression. Both ground surfaces extending in depth and frontally-oriented surfaces were included. Intervals on surfaces with curved regions were judged smaller than intervals on planes. This effect was found both for intervals oriented in depth and frontally.

The results of the three series of experiments indicate that the perceived distance between points on a surface is affected by the presence of a curved region or texture discontinuity in the surface. These relationships exist regardless of the orientation of the distance interval. While texture is generally recognized to be a source of information for depth perception, these experiments demonstrate that characteristics of texture also affect the perceived size of frontal intervals.
