Thesis (Psy.D.)--Azusa Pacific University, 2001.
Depression, once considered exclusively an adult mental disorder, has been shown to affect 2% of children today. Symptoms and signs of children suffering from major depression must be recognized as they differ from those of the adult population. These differing symptoms include irritability, somatic complaints, and sleep disturbances. Many of these children need intensive treatment, including more restrictive treatment such as a psychiatric hospitalization. Shorter hospitalizations due to managed care create the need to utilize creativity in treatment of mental health disorders. One creative option is that of bibliotherapy which has demonstrated significant positive results with many ages and many disorders. In this project, the author created a children's book to utilize in a psychiatric setting with children suffering from Major Depressive Disorder.
