Simulations have been found to be effective in attitude studies and in terms of retention. Simulations encourage students to become actively involved in the learning experience and have been found to be a useful technique to supplement other teaching activities.

Educators considering implementing a computer simulation must decide on the optimum placement of the simulation in the unit of instruction to maximize student learning. This study examined student achievement using two different placements for the computer simulation, The Civil War, in a unit of instruction of 8th grade American History students in a suburban middle school.

One hundred students who were enrolled with the same teacher were divided into three experimental groups. Groups were formed by the random assignment of intact class periods. Group 1 received instruction with the computer simulation prior to the regular unit of instruction. In this setting, the simulation was used as a learning base that generates interest and enables students to identify and define problems. Group 2 received instruction with the computer simulation after completing the regular unit of instruction. In this setting the simulation was used to reinforce, integrate, and apply material learned. Group 3 served as a control group and did not receive instruction with the simulation.

Analysis of Covariance was used to partition out variance attributed to the covariate used, which was each student's overall history average. The results from ANCOVA showed that no significant difference occurred between the three experimental groups. It was concluded that the simulation used consisted of features that were of benefit to both placement groups. The fact that the treatment groups did not out-perform the control group may indicate a lack of sensitivity in the assessment instrument to the potential advantages presented by the simulation.
