Thesis (Ph.D.)--Walden University, 2002.
This study explores the determinants that most frequently influence military service members to separate from or remain on active duty. At issue is what factors service members report as most satisfying or dissatisfying, and which may influence their career decisions. Problems associated with large-scale military attrition include adverse impact on remaining members, degraded operational readiness, and potential compromises to national security.

An attitudinal-type self-administered questionnaire was sent to 300 randomly selected service members, who proportionally represented each branch of the U.S. armed forces, and who were nearing the end of their contracted term. Research questions focused on the hypothesis that certain universal factors may have influenced the service members' decision to enter, depart, and remain on active duty.

The completed sample consisted of 47 respondents stationed at 38 military installations throughout the United States. The immediate aftermath of 11 September 2001 may have affected overall participation and contributed to the 26.11% adjusted response rate. Some of the qualitative findings indicate that certain personal, support, military, and social factors may influence career decisions. Study-derived recommendations should be useful in translating plans into social action---helping to improve the quality of military life, so service members may serve with greater professional effectiveness and live with greater personal satisfaction.
