Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2004.
This thesis looks at the nature of myth, its definitions, and the various theories on myth espoused primarily since the nineteenth century. On the basis that such a variety of opinions indicates that a definitive, overarching definition is unlikely to be found through a prescriptive process, the thesis utilizes the work on myth of Walter Burkert, taking as a starting point his position that myth is applied narrative. Building upon Burkert's synthesis of various strands of myth theory, the thesis then moves beyond Burkert to posit myth as a fluid entity, adaptable, and adapted, according to circumstance, function, and the level of resonance myth maintains within an audience community, even when utilized in literature. The thesis then examines this proposal through the development of the figure of King Arthur, both in early mythology and in later literary representations, seeking to identify the areas of applicable context, function and resonance that keep the Arthurian myth alive even to the present day.
