C. S. Lewis achieved significant notoriety as an apologist for the Christian faith. Many people have relied on his writings to define and explain various elements of Christian doctrine. This literary reputation has led, unfortunately, to a broad misperception about the nature and purpose of his Chronicles of Narnia. Readers often treat the seven stories as allegories to the Christian story, which was not Lewis's intent in writing the Chronicles.

Guided by his Platonic Christian Objectivism, as well as his conviction that myth is the bearer of reality, Lewis wrote the Chronicles as a way for children and adults to participate in the deeper reality that underlies the Christian story. Through the Chronicles, Lewis intended for readers to feel and experience, not necessarily receive an explanation of, the truth of the story.

This dissertation chronicles the development of Lewis's spiritual life and relates it to the epistemological bias Lewis maintained concerning participatory and relational knowledge. The dissertation concludes that Lewis's knowledge of transcendent reality came through his acquaintance with those whom he intuitively sensed were acquainted with the God of Christianity. Further, the dissertation posits that this model of spirituality, knowledge by spiritual acquaintance---that is, relational spirituality---is the model that Lewis incorporates into his Chronicles. Following the relational spirituality model, Lewis plots the pilgrimage of several children in search of the transcendent being (Aslan). Through each journey, spiritual guides appear to lead the way closer and closer to the Lion. Using this literary device, Lewis intended for his readers to experience the mentoring relationships fostered between the children and their Narnian spiritual guides.

The remainder of the dissertation is a book-by-book analysis of the Chronicles as seen through the lens of relational spirituality. Spiritual guides are identified in each story, and the relationships they cultivate with the pilgrim children are described. An appendix lists questions to accompany each story as an aid to help readers in engaging the narrative through the lens of relational spirituality.
