The purpose of this study was to describe the indigenous artisan's lived experience while engaged in the creative process. The focus was on the lived experience of the indigenous artisan and how the self is described as it participated in the experience of creating art. The phenomenon to be explored was the nature and quality of the creative experience.

In this way, a free flow of information emerged through informal conversations. Native American artisans (11) were interviewed in Arizona and New Mexico who described their individual lived experiences of creating art. The interview/discussions served as the primary source of data. The objects of art, themselves, provided hermeneutical text. Both researcher and participants discussed the topic to reflectively bring into awareness the experiential meanings derived from combined experiences.

The analysis of the data occurred in overlapping layers consisting of individual descriptions; experiential expressions; unifying themes; theme amplification; reduction techniques; synthesis of plots and patterns; and thematic tapering. Last of all, a collective experience of the participants was compiled into a composite textural synthesis. Following a process of reflective/reflexive synthesis from the above actions, six general constructs emerged.

It was found that: (a) through the art of crafting, utilitarian objects captured reflective qualities of the spiritual, cultural, and natural environments; (b) through reflexivity, the artisan became aware of the transpersonal Self and further developed reflectivity through this interaction; (c) a sense of the sacred was conveyed as object becomes transformed from natural materials in their original state to objects of aesthetic/utilitarian value; (d) a centering process creates a pathway to the transpersonal Self; (e) the inspiration arises from one's relation to nature and the ancestral past; (f) the use of primordial symbols and patterns prove a close connection to the natural realm (g) not only is the creation of an object undergoing transformation, but, also, the artisan; (h) the created objects convey a sacred meaning, so a transpersonal space is created; (i) the state of well being extends to community; (j) that there exists an intimate bond between artisan and object with a transpersonal connection to ancestral past and future.

It was concluded that artists achieved a transpersonal state when engaged in the creative process. This state produced well being and balance that can be maintained and extended into other areas of daily life. The implications of this study are that the act of creating sacred art significantly contributes to greater self awareness, self discovery, and overall well-being for individual and community.

The results of the research uphold the theories of put forth in the literature review. The developing self is in an intimate relationship with the surrounding environment. Through a process of centering and concentration, an artisan's relationship to the object is transformative for object, artisan, and those beholding the object. A transpersonal connection to the ancestral past extends as a bridge to future generation. Creativity as a gateway to inner wisdom and transpersonal awareness, as it mirrors the inherent creativity of the earth and/or environment. The crafting of utilitarian objects capture the reflective qualities of the spiritual, cultural, and natural environments.
