The purpose of this thesis is to analyze several aspects of an important eighteenth-century British periodical, the Gentleman's Magazine. This study will reveal that the timing of the magazine's debut, the miscellaneous nature of the magazine and the experimental approach of its founder, and the interactive relationship between its creators and its consumers ensured its growth and success. These conclusions will be demonstrated in the following ways: by a detailed analysis of the contents of the magazine volumes of the early 1740s; through a study of the multifaceted ways in which eighteenth-century British views of nature are revealed in the materials in the magazine; and by an examination of the Gentleman's Magazine coverage of the conflict between Britain and her North American colonies during the period 1763--1775.
