Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Dominguez Hills, 2003.
Sherlock Holmes, legendary fictional detective, manifested seemingly supernatural powers of observation and the ability to solve cases deemed unsolvable by the local police. His apparent supernatural abilities came, of course, from the hand of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Holmes' creator and a medical doctor influenced by the Spiritualist movement in England during the late nineteenth century. The use of para-rational thought allows Holmes to solve cases the local police could not solve. This study will use primary and secondary sources to research the uses of Spiritualism and para-rational thought in the short stories and novels by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The results are presented in chapters depicting (1) the para-rational process, (2) the influence of Spiritualism on Doyle, (3) the religious overtones in Doyle's works, (4) the mystical experiences of Holmes, (5) the use of psychic tricks in solving mysteries, (6) the application of Spiritualistic symbolism in the character of Sherlock Holmes, and (7) conclusions.
