The number of culturally-diverse students attending nursing schools in the United States is increasing. Despite the increase, the number of culturally-diverse students actually completing a program is less impressive. The significance of this study was based on issues occurring in nursing practice, education, and society at large. Not only is there a national, state, and local nursing shortage, there is also a lack of ethnic diversity among practicing nurses to care for an increasingly diverse society. The urgency to retain culturally diverse nursing students and assist them in being successful was based on the need to supply the nursing workforce with diverse nurses that are able to deliver culturally sensitive care. Because of its large diverse nursing student population, the chosen nursing school was in an ideal position to contribute to increasing the workforce-diversity by developing strategies to promote student success.

520 $a This qualitative study described the experiences of students with English as a second language (ESL) in a baccalaureate-nursing program as a way of improving student retention. Three participants were selected from a class of baccalaureate-nursing students to engage in indepth interviewing. All participants had minority status, spoke ESL, and demonstrated academic difficulty as defined in this study. Data analysis was performed using Miles and Huberman's (1994) recommendations. Three major themes revealed that participants' current learning styles were influenced by their exposure to early structured home and educational environments, felt the need to prove themselves worthy as students, and possessed a great desire to do anything necessary to achieve success in the nursing program The findings implied that faculty must become culturally competent to meet the needs of ESL students while taking special care to include students in strategic planning to enhance their success.
