The boshanlu or universal mountain censer, is a sub-type of the general censer type known as the xianglu. This sub-type appeared in a fully developed form during the reign of Wudi of the Western Han period. According to recent archaeological excavations, those vessels with the most elaborate iconography date earliest and bear only cursory resemblance to the co-existent censer sub-type which had a domed lid and geometric decor. No contemporary texts mention the boshanlu, but the creation of this vessel and its occurrence in aristocratic tombs raise questions about its significance and function.Subjects--Topical Terms:

In my examination of nearly one hundred excavated mountain censers, the extent of the diffusion of this sub-type during the Western Han period is revealed. Its occurrence known from these excavation sites follows patterns of population distribution, and the sub-type also is found in fringe areas associated with expansion of the kingdom. The vessels date as early as the mid Western Han period according to numismatic and stylistic evidence. With the exception of three vessels, inscriptions are not found on boshanlu of the Western Han period. The earliest, safely dated mountain censer was made for use in the Weiyang palace at Changan in 135 B.C. and was later presented to the elder sister of Wudi. Another splendid boshanlu dated no later than 113 B.C. was excavated from the tomb of Wudi's half-brother, Liu Sheng. The association with the imperial family exemplified by these two magnificent, dated vessels suggests that they indeed might have had their origins as part of the royal prerogative.

The diffusion of the mountain-lidded vessel in fundamentally the same form at the same time, may have been aided by a governmental policy instituted shortly before the reign of Han Wudi. By 157 B.C. all of the rulers of kingdoms throughout the empire were members of the Imperial family who replaced local kings. In examining the boshanlu, I have distinguished the typological features of the vessel and then considered the vessel in relation to its cultural milieu. The creation of this vessel with its own particular iconography was most likely dependent on analogous themes in other realms of aristocratic life, such as religion, philosophy and literature, that had evolved earlier.
