Thesis (D.N.S.)--Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center School of Nursing, 2003.
This study posited that early childhood abuse is a factor in the development of substance abuse and other trauma-related symptoms leading to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and repeated substance abuse relapses. Several studies in recent years have identified PTSD as among the most common of psychiatric disorders. The purpose of this study was to describe and compare PTSD symptoms of dissociation, anxiety, depression, post-sexual trauma abuse, sleep disturbance, and sexual problems of male/female veteran substance abusers who have been sexually abused and male/female substance abusers who have no history of sexual abuse.

This retrospective study described and compared the PTSD symptoms of male and female veterans who were either sexually abused or not sexually abused, and who were patients in a VA substance abuse program. Attention focused primarily on certain variables relating to PTSD (dissociation, anxiety, depression, post-sexual trauma abuse, sleep disturbance, and sexual problems). Significant findings included: (a) Male veterans who were sexually abused had significantly more PTSD symptoms than did male veterans who were not sexually abused. (b) Female veterans who were sexually abused had significantly more PTSD symptoms than did female veterans who were not sexually abused. It is important to note that males who were not sexually abused also reported the same PTSD symptoms (albeit significantly fewer in number).

This study was conducted to bring attention to health care providers the potential relationship between childhood sexual trauma with resultant PTSD symptoms as well as the relationship between sexual abuse and adult substance abuse. Although it is taken for granted that females are more apt to have been sexually abused, it is less recognized in the male population. The research literature has shown that a significant relationship exists between substance abuse and sexual abuse.
