Scientists have studied the human visual system for many years but little of this research has been applied to graphical image generation. The purpose of this research is to increase visual realism in graphics and therefore increase image recognition and readability. This dissertation discusses how some characteristics of the human visual system can be borrowed to generate graphic images that increase realism. I developed two new projection methods, the cylindrical system and the spherical system. These systems were based upon three ideas. My first idea was to assume that not all people see the same way. Second, the retinal image is curved therefore slightly warped images may be perferred. And finally, no intermediate projection surface was to be used. The resulting system produced images which allowed the user to set visual preferences, mimic the retinal curve, and use a direct rasterization method to project images to the screen.

Multiple surveys were used to strengthen my belief that images which imitated our visual system were comparable to the traditional perspective and in some cases increased visual comprehension. Conclusions from this work include: (1) both the cylindrical and spherical models increased size and depth perception over the standard planar model, (2) both models also increased reading and retention rate over the planar model, and (3) a point distribution function within the new models is a highly effective tool to set user preferences.
