This qualitative, descriptive study described the patterns of evolving consciousness of adult men recovering from gambling addiction. Newman's (1986, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1995, 1997, 2000) theoretical framework guided this study. A purposefully selected convenience sample of 3 adult men, who were recovering pathological gamblers and attending Gamblers Anonymous, was recruited. Data were collected via an interview guide developed by the researcher based on Newman's protocol for research. Patterns manifested by all 3 men involved winning a jackpot and enjoying gambling, developing problems due to gambling, experiencing a crisis, attending Gamblers Anonymous, and depending on a higher power. All 3 men defined their higher power as the effects of the group meeting.
