D'Souza (1995) defined black rage as a response to black suffering and failure, which is exacerbated by "the irresistible temptation to attribute African American problems to a history of white racist oppression" (6). Based on this definition, I proposed a theory of black rage suggesting that certain interracial crimes, where blacks are the offenders and whites are the victims, are perhaps motivated by anger and frustration at the longstanding subordinate position of Black Americans.

I examined the proposed theory of black rage in the context of the American prison. Inmate narratives provided by Carroll (1974, 1977) and Robinson (1971) demonstrated the sense of rage and frustration imported into the American prison system by black males. In addition to the inmate narratives, prison victimization studies found black males over-represented among the aggressors in prison assaults, and white males over-represented among the victims. These two findings suggested that black rage against white America was a significant factor in understanding the observed interracial pattern in prison assaults. Although I proposed and examined the theory in the context of prison violence, the processes and variables described offer tremendous value in explaining other interracial patterns observed in crime and violence statistics.

Using institution-level data from the 1984, 1990, and 1995 versions of the Census of State and Federal Adult Correctional Facilities, I estimated cross-sectional TOBIT models and longitudinal change score regression models to test the core assumptions of the black rage theory. Both the cross-sectional and longitudinal findings consistently revealed strong support for the theory of black rage among correctional facilities located in the Midwest region of the U.S. Thus, more so than in any other region, there was a strong positive relationship between the percentage of black male inmates in the Midwest and the staff assault rate. Likewise, in the Midwest there was strong negative relationship between the percentage of black staff and the staff assault rate. Contrary to expectations, correctional facilities located in the Southeast offered the least support for the black rage theory.
