This research evaluated the use of a regular diet for elderly type 2 diabetics in an institutionalized setting, using a quasi-experimental multiple group time series design. This study took place in four nursing homes within western New York. The sample consisted of 34 elderly long-term care residents with a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The control group was served a no-concentrated sweets diet and the experimental group received a regular diet for a period of three months. The results of this study showed that there was no significant change in serum albumin, percent ideal body weight, mean weekly fasting blood glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin, and dietary intake, over the course of this study in control group subjects or experimental group subjects. These results support the use of regular diets for elderly institutionalized individuals with type 2 diabetes as recommended by the American Diabetes Association.
