Post-menopausal women are most often affected by urinary incontinence and tend to accept urinary incontinence as normal. Women do not report the problem and try to manage it independently and silently. The effect that urinary incontinence has on the psychological health of post-menopausal women is not clear. No study has examined if self-esteem is a function of urinary continence. The purpose of this study was to determine if self-esteem is a function of urinary continence in post-menopausal women. Self-esteem was measured using the Rosenberg Self-esteem Scale. Urinary continence was measured by the net strength of the pelvic muscle floor and the Patient Perceived Improvement Scale.

This study used a repeated measures within-subjects design to examine the relationship between self-esteem and urinary continence in a group of post-menopausal women. The women were recruited from two clinics that provided biofeedback as an outpatient treatment for stress, urge, and mixed urinary incontinence. Data collection took place over 13 months. The analysis was based on data gathered from the fifteen women who completed the study. Urinary continence, measured by net strength of the pelvic muscle floor, did increase across time for these subjects, F(2,9) = 8.20, p = .009. Patient perception of improvement remained consistent from the end of treatment to one-month following treatment (p = 1.00). Self-esteem increased across time for the women, F(2,9) = 4.69; p = .039, No significant correlation was found on the change scores of the study variables (p > .05). Findings must be considered cautiously due to the small number of subjects.

This study validated the experience of urinary incontinence in post-menopausal women and laid a foundation for future research. Subsequent studies, with larger samples, may explore the psychological health of aging women who have varied experiences of loss of control. Nursing education and nursing practice concerns of women with urinary incontinence are also areas worthy of examination.
