The purpose of the study was to discover the extent to which administrators, members of the board, parents, and faculty at an independent (private) college preparatory school share a vision of the role of instrumental music in context of their students' education.

The survey, conducted during the academic year 2001--2002, revealed a community of adults generally supportive of instrumental music instruction at their school. Many respondents had personal experience as children with instrumental music lessons and participation in school performing ensembles, and as adults attend concerts with and provide private instruction on instruments for their own children.

However, perceptions regarding relative worth of particular activities and conditions sometimes varied, often significantly, indicating the need for ongoing dialogue and advocacy for instrumental music by individuals with strong opinions and high expectations.
