Thesis (Ph.D.)--The University of Akron, 2004.
Throughout the vocational literature, the influence and importance of work values in vocational behavior has been well documented (Judge & Bretz, 1992; Roe & Ester, 1999). Nevertheless, research efforts examining work values have been mostly descriptive, exploratory, and atheoretical, resulting in a fragmented and divergent body of literature that lacks synthesis, integration, and application (Sagie, Elizur, & Koslowsky, 1996). In order to address these concerns and clarify how values impact vocational interests, the current study examined the function of values within Social Cognitive Career Theory (Lent, Brown, & Hackett, 1994). A final sample of 65 female and 59 male undergraduate students completed measures of work values, interests, outcome likelihood expectations, and self-efficacy. Values and interests generally related as expected, but differences were obtained across genders. Additionally, values and outcome likelihood expectations did not consistently account for unique variance in interests, but self-efficacy did. Finally, outcome likelihood expectations did not moderate the relations for values to interests. The implications of these findings for career counseling practice and future research on work values are then discussed.
