Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Illinois at Chicago, 2003.
A pedagogical program designed to assist youth in underserved communities to better understand and perhaps facilitate their future decisions was conducted. Called the "Career Club," the program was an extension of Don Hellison's "Coaching Club," a part of his well-known Responsibility Model (RM) (1995, 2000). The Career Club was based on the rationale that youth in RM programs often do not transition well to the work world, college, or other aspirations viewed as meaningfully contributing to society.

The underlying rationale, development, and implementation of this unique program were described; program effectiveness was evaluated through a variety of qualitative and quantitative analyses. Improvements to the initial concept were then offered based on these results, along with suggestions for future research and educational development. The program was founded on the primary investigator's nine years of direct teaching experiences with underserved and/or at-risk youth, numerous concepts from the fields of career education, cross-age teaching, service learning, and the theory of possible selves.

The Career Club was held for one hour per week for nine sessions in an inner city elementary school on the near West Side of Chicago. Participants were comprised of 12 seventh and eighth graders who had at least one year of experience in a Coaching Club. Exposure to the coaching of fourth graders was intended to both provide a real-world example of a career, and hopefully occasion opportunities for the contemplation of other possible futures. The essential goals of these nine sessions were to successfully implement the program, observe and record participant progress, questions, and concerns, and hopefully optimize the program based on these results.

Based on the various data sources, the Career Club seemed effective in providing the participants a meaningful career exploration in coaching. Data also seemed to suggest that the linking of these coaching experiences to elements necessary for the realization of their choices for future orientation was also realized.
