Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Minnesota, 2004.
The dissertation investigated the design processes of Nancy Carlson and Chris Van Allsburg, contemporary, award-winning illustrators of children's picture books, through qualitative and quantitative research methods. Data about their design processes was gathered from interviews using a moderately-scheduled interview guide, articles from scholarly and popular magazines, and Web sites. In addition, the illustrators' original working drawings, which are housed in Children's Literature Research Collection (CLRC) at the University of Minnesota, were included in the study.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The study presented the data about the illustrators' design processes within a design context and from a human ecological perspective. Guntern's (1993) Eco-anthropological model of the creative [ design] process was used to categorize the primary and secondary textual data according to the illustrators'---or reference systems'---interaction with their physical and biological environments beginning from childhood. Also, the study included a review of the similarities and differences between creativity, design, creative process, and design process---just a few of the variations among many discussed in the literature.

The research objectives of the study were: (a) to further the understanding of the design processes used by professional illustrators, (b) to present a model of the design processes used by professional illustrators, (c) to understand the role of creativity in the design processes used by professional illustrators, (d) to extend the practice of formal research in the largely unexplored field of visual arts, and (e) to contribute to existing knowledge of design processes in the field of visual arts through research, presentation, and publication of the results of the research project.

The most important implication of the study is the use of a theoretical framework as a structure of analysis for diverse materials such as interviews, literature, and visuals. Furthermore, the study adds to a growing body of literature concerning the design process and is unique because of the focus on illustration.
