ANG II) on the cardiovascular system of eels, Anguilla rostrata, were assessed.

Dorsal aortic blood flow (DABF) decreased by 50% 12-16 days after STX; internal and external (skin and fins) organ blood flows also tended to decrease. The reduction in DABF was due to a decrease in cardiac output (negative inotropic effect) and an increase in branchial shunting. Electrolyte disturbances coincided temporally with the changes in blood flow. The decreased peripheral blood flow and increased perfusion of the branchial chloride cells may lead to the electrolyte changes.

Physiological doses of ANG II caused a dose-dependent increase in dorsal aortic blood pressure which was partly mediated by catecholamines acting via

adrenoceptors. This vasopressor response was due mainly to an increase in blood flow (via positive inotropic and chronotropic effects); direct peripheral vasoconstriction played a minor role.
