Studies conclusively show that school library programs have great potential to increase student achievement. In spite of these findings, many school libraries today are undervalued and underutilized, often becoming the first victim of budget cuts. In Texas, as well as other states, the current debate over what should be considered a direct classroom instructional expense threatens the very existence of school libraries and librarians. If libraries are classified as educational support, many districts will no longer be able to afford library materials or certified librarians. This study reviews research citing the lack of support for school libraries, both philosophically and financially, from school principals. The author reports on the findings of a survey conducted to determine if school administrators believe that an effective school library program can increase student achievement. The author suggests that (a) further research into the beliefs of school administrators regarding the instructional role of the school library is necessary in order to facilitate full integration of school libraries into the instructional program through administrator/librarian collaboration, and (b) school librarians should conduct action research to identify the specific aspects of the school library program that contribute to academic achievement.Subjects--Topical Terms:
