Eels were sampled on 20 dates in the Penobscot River estuary, Maine, with paired plankton nets in a series of tows which encompassed the flood tide. For each tow the average catch was converted to a percent of the total catch for that flood tide. The times of ascents and descents were compared to the time of slack water, estimated from concurrent velocity profiles. The time that eels spent in the water column was the time between ascents and descents.

There was a significant trend in the timing of ascents relative to the time of slack water in three different water conditions. The timing of descents relative to slack water was not significantly different in the three water conditions. The length of time eels spent in the water column on the flood tide was not significantly different in the three water conditions, which would be the case if the eels' sojourns were timed by an endogenous clock. If eels used exogenous cues their sojourns would vary in length, because the timing of these cues varies.

I conducted experiments to determine whether eels collected from tidal and nontidal water show evidence of endogenous activity rhythms, and whether these activity rhythms can be entrained.

Eels were videotaped in groups or individually for at least 75 h. I analyzed for the presence, significance, and periodicity of activity rhythms.

Groups of eels from tidal water displayed activity rhythms with circatidal periodicities, but groups from nontidal water did not. The activity rhythms of eels from tidal water appeared to be entrained by changes in current direction every 6.2 h but not by changes in current direction every 5.0 h. Eels from tidal water subjected to water changes every 5.0 h showed no rhythmic activity. Only two of 100 eels observed individually were periodically active. The activity rhythms would allow an eel to time its vertical migrations despite varying environmental conditions.
