Cultural institutions, specifically art museums, have historically been thought to have positive effects on their visitors. Dewey, Vygotsky, Csikszentmihalyi, and others have argued for the general positive psychological impact of encounters with the fine arts. Although there has been substantial research on a variety of issues related to museum visitation, there is no specific research on the issue of the affective outcomes of visiting an art museum. This study was designed to address that void by specifically examining the consequences of art museum visitation in terms of how visitors view themselves as individuals in relationship to intrapersonal, interpersonal, and societal self-perceptions. Using an instrument developed by Barber, Higgins, Smith, and Ballou (1996) to study aspects of citizenship, participants were asked to compare themselves to others in terms of their ability to think about the future, interact well for others, show concern for society at large, etc. The scale was factor analyzed and the original factors of intrapersonal, interpersonal, and societal self-perception were replicated. The independent variables investigated were place in visitation (beginning, middle, or end), type of museum, demographic and psychographic characteristics of visitors, and visitor behaviors in the museum. Results indicate that art museum visitors in the middle of their visit rate themselves more highly in terms of intrapersonal self-perception than visitors at the beginning or at the end of a visit. In addition, results show that the nature of the art on display influences self-perception. It appears to be the case in general that individuals are influenced by their visit in terms of looking at broad issues of themselves, others, and society in general. This influence appears to wane and return to a point very similar to the beginning of the visit by the time the visit is over. Other findings indicate that the nature of the art on display has an influence on visitor response as well.
