Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek language courses are challenging for students and teachers. Students typically find the languages difficult and often do not carry their Hebrew and Greek training forward to its practical use in ministry. Teachers have attempted a variety of approaches to address the problem. This dissertation/project researches relevant issues and responds by developing introductory Hebrew and Greek courses.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The project's research expands the vision of possible responses to the challenge: (1) summaries of presentations at the 2005 Society of Biblical Literature sessions related to teaching biblical languages, (2) interviews of Biblical language teachers and students, (3) email exchanges with scholars (Sharon Alley and Randall Buth) of the Biblical Language Center near Jerusalem, and (4) a literature review of general, foreign language, and biblical language pedagogy.

The vision is focused by the time and place of the project's ministry context, the Religious Studies Department of Marylhurst University, Marylhurst, Oregon. Additional focus is provided by the development of biblical and theological foundations. The motif "authenticity" is explored from the side of the Bible (most authentic in its original languages) and from the side of the person encountering the Bible (most authentic when "heart, soul, mind, and strength" are engaged). The Shema of the Hebrew Bible is examined along with Jesus' role as teacher in his use and expansion of the Shema. Matthew's presentation of Jesus as learner in the story of the Samaritan woman is also explored.

The results of the project are designs for introductory Biblical Hebrew and New Testament Greek courses. The course designs adopt the textbooks and adapt the "living-language" program of the Biblical Language Center. A computer component using BibleWorks is added. A sample course syllabus, lesson plans, and course handouts are provided.

This approach teaches students to know the languages rather than to know things about them, to internalize the languages into their heart and soul. It teaches to their mind by training them to use Bible software for a sustained use of biblical languages in ministry, and teaches to their strength by considering various learning styles and kinds of intelligence.
