No consensus exists among scholarship in general concerning the interpretation of the baptism in the Holy Spirit in Acts. Scholars typically understand Lukan pneumatology in keeping with the tradition with which they are aligned. However, in an attempt to move beyond the current entrenchment, this dissertation will consider Acts 2:37-39 as a paradigm for Luke's view of Spirit-baptism.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Chapter one surveys the historic rise of Spirit-baptism within the traditions of classical Pentecostalism, Protestant charismatics, Roman Catholic charismatics, and Evangelicalism. The influence of classical Pentecostalism upon the other traditions is noted, but also shown is how Evangelicalism has affected Pentecostalism. Chapter two surveys and evaluates the leading methodologies within each of these four groups. Chapter three examines four major critical and hermeneutical issues that give shape to Luke's view of the Spirit: Lukan historiography, Spirit-baptism and Heilsgeschichte, a hermeneutic for historical narrative, and Lukan biblical theology as a hermeneutic.

Chapter four provides a detailed exegesis of Acts 2:37-39. The two kai&d12; in 2:38 provide the key to interpreting this passage. These kai&d12; unite the three elements of conversion: repentance/faith, baptism, and the gift of the Spirit. In addition, Acts 2:38 is not to be interpreted in a strict temporal sequence, but rather theologically. The subjective elements of conversion are repentance/faith, which is then expressed in baptism. In response, God gives the gift of the Holy Spirit. This promise is not just for those present at the day of Pentecost, but for all generations, and for as many as God calls to himself.

Chapter five exegetes salient portions of the three corporate texts in Acts which record the coming of the Spirit: the Samaritan Pentecost (8:4-24), the Gentile Pentecost (10:1-11:18), and Paul's encounter with some disciples in Ephesus (19:1-7). In addition, a comparison of the Samaritan and Gentile narratives sheds light on why God delayed the giving of the Spirit in Samaria but gave the Spirit to the Gentiles at the moment of faith. When understood in their historical context, each of these episodes is in harmony with the theological understanding of Acts 2:37-39.

This dissertation concludes that Acts 2:37-39 is a Lukan paradigm for understanding Spirit-baptism. This passage argues against the classical Pentecostal, Protestant charismatic, and Roman Catholic charismatic (sacramental) views. Instead, it presents conversion as a unified experience, which is comprised of the subjective elements of repentance/faith and baptism, and the divine response of the gift of the Holy Spirit.
