Chapter 1 offers a review of Ezekiel studies since 1900, especially the uniformity with which the God-Israel relationship has been portrayed. An alternative understanding of relationship is presented, as well as a discussion of the hardened heart motif, adapted from Exod 4-14, as the vehicle for applying a relational theology to the book.

Chapter 2 analyzes the literary structure of several heart passages (Ezek 2:4; 3:7, 10; 6:9; 11:19-21; 14:3-7; 16:30; 18:31; 20:16; 33:31; 36:26; 44:7-9) to demonstrate the interconnectedness involved in genuine relationship and to show the mutual affectability between God and Israel. The heart is shown to be the means by which Israel expresses its (un)faithfulness to God. God's faithfulness to Israel is demonstrated in the gift of a new heart of flesh that re-establishes the self-identity of the people and subsequently affects the land and the interpersonal relationships within the community of Israel.

Chapter 3 asserts that it is appropriate to study the prophet Ezekiel as a character in the book to understand faithfulness within the divine-human relationship more fully. A narrative analysis of Ezekiel's recorded words and actions reveals Ezekiel's journey from reluctant acceptance of his commission to more complete understanding of God's faithfulness. By investigating Ezekiel's words and actions, it becomes evident to the contemporary reader that Ezekiel reflects genuine faithfulness within relationship for the people of Israel. During a transitional period in Israel's spiritual journey, Ezekiel offers them the means for, and the form of, true relationship with God.

Chapter 4 offers some final insights into the book of Ezekiel drawn from the exegesis of the previous chapters and underscores the implications of a relational reading of Ezekiel for the contemporary reader.
