The thesis of this dissertation is that Genesis 1--11 presents a coherent theological message which is effectively identifiable by means of a literary-theological exegesis of the text. Further, it is proposed that the specific message of this section is that humankind must, in unity, demonstrate faith and obedience toward God while functioning as God's representative and expectantly awaiting his full blessing, which will be realized when God restores to its full intended vitality the creation which was corrupted through humanity's failure.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Genesis 1--11, in whole or in part, has been the focus of an enormous amount of study over the last three hundred years; however, due to the dominance of diachronic studies, only relatively recently have treatments of these chapters been particularly related to their potential unity and theological purpose. With the increased attention to synchronic approaches in the latter twentieth century, many scholars began to consider Genesis 1--11 from the perspective of a literary unity in its final form and, therefore, to consider matters of intent and theological content. In spite of this increased emphasis on synchronic approaches, there have been virtually no attempts to consider Genesis 1--11 as a literary and theological unity presenting a coherent message.

This dissertation attempts to begin filling this void by seeking to identify the message of these chapters through utilization of a literary-theological approach. The study focuses on literary features, including the broader issues of both surface and deep structure. Other topics of special concern are matters of rhetoric as the art of composition for the purpose of communication and persuasion, and the use of speech, an important indicator of key issues in Hebrew narrative.

The body of the dissertation comprises (1) introductory matters, (2) argument for a literary unity of the final form of the text, (3) exegesis of the text, divided into sections Genesis 1:1--2:3; 2:4--4:26; and 5:1--11:27, and (4) summary, significance for implied readers, and implications for future study.
