Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University, 2007.
In this dissertation I argue that Friedrich Nietzsche's hostile critique of Christianity extends not only to the institutional Church but also to its acknowledged founder, Jesus of Nazareth. I develop this argument by examining his use of Scripture in Also sprach Zarathustra. I support my findings by examining the three works that precede Zarathustra: Human, All-too-Human, Daybreak, and The Gay Science. This thesis contends---against much of the scholarly literature---that Nietzsche's view of Jesus did not differ from his view of Christianity at the time at which he wrote Zarathustra.Subjects--Topical Terms:

The first chapter presents Nietzsche in his religious context, exploring his religious upbringing and various factors leading to his break from Christianity, especially German Biblical Criticism. Chapter two demonstrates how Nietzsche patterned Zarathustra after the Jesus presented in the Gospels, creating parallels by appropriating biblical genres as a means of both associating with and attacking Jesus. Chapter three explores instances of his expressed hostility towards Jesus. Chapter four complements this perspective by examining disparaging remarks Zarathustra makes about Christianity. Chapter five completes the study by illustrating how Nietzsche's three previous works, Human, Daybreak, and The Gay Science, function as an introduction, preparation, and commentary to Zarathustra .

By carefully studying his use of both the Old and the New Testaments, this thesis demonstrates that Nietzsche's evaluation of Jesus does not markedly differ from his evaluation of Christianity. He is as critical of Christianity's avowed founder as he is of Christianity itself. This is true not only in Zarathustra but also in the three works that precede it. Throughout the scope of these works Nietzsche makes no distinction between Jesus' life and teachings and the life and teachings of subsequent Christians. Though much of the scholarly literature appears to have uncritically---and illegitimately---applied the "Jesus of history" versus "Christ of faith" construal to the corpus of Nietzsche's work as a whole, this thesis asserts that Nietzsche's overall task was one of dismantling not only the Christianity that was such a central part of his life, but also one of dismantling the misunderstood life of its founder, Jesus of Nazareth.
