Thesis (M.A.)--Covenant Theological Seminary, 2006.
A common opinion among scholars is that Mark 9:33-50 is comprised of independent paragraphs linked together on the basis of common words (catchwords or Stichworter). They do not tell of a single event. This is the catchwords hypothesis. The paragraphs so linked are the argument about true greatness, the unknown exorcist, warnings concerning temptations, and the salt sayings. The author of this thesis employs semantic cohesion theory to argue against the catchwords hypothesis. In verse-by-verse commentary, he differs from the common ethical interpretation and advances a new holistic interpretation. As a single episode of Jesus' teaching, it tells of his effort to prepare the Twelve for their role as leaders of his movement after his predicted death. They expect Jesus' popularity to continue to grow, but Jesus focuses on the great hardships he knows they will face as they set out to proclaim him as the Christ.Subjects--Topical Terms:
