Throughout history, racism has provided grounds for people groups to oppress one another. The principle of fundamental humanity states that all persons are essentially equal, and as such, taxonomic categories of persons such as race, gender and class are illusory and potentially harmful. By analyzing the stories of Nicodemus and the Samaritan woman in the Gospel of John, attending especially to language that implies verticality and water-symbolism, we can see that the author believes that all persons have the same fundamental need of "rebirth" or realignment within society. This need is basic to all persons rich and poor, Jew and Samaritan, male and female, and as such can be used to construct a rhetoric with which to argue that the various distinctions among groups of humanity are illusory. By moving past them, we can escape the damage done in the past and move toward a brighter future.
