Marriage, in general, is in a state of disarray, in part, perhaps, because of a lack of understanding of how healthy marriages function. The Biblical book of Ephesians gives directives for both men and women in marriage: men are to love their wives to the point of self-sacrifice, women are to submit to their husbands, and wives and husbands are to submit to each other. Too often, the concept of wifely submission is taken out of context, either to oppress women or to condemn the Biblical directives for marriage. George Eliot's Middlemarch reflects how these ideals are abused through one-sided submission in the marriages of the Casaubons and Lydgates, how they are put into practice successfully in the mutually submissive marriage of the Garths, and how they are used to improve marriage in the case of the Bulstrodes.
