The objective of this study was to determine whether a naturally-occurring rock outcrop system known as an alvar could be used as a restoration target in limestone quarry floor rehabilitation. The biophysical characteristics and seed banks of quarry floors across southern Ontario, Canada were surveyed and compared to the biophysical characteristics and seed banks of alvars. Results indicated that alvars could be used as a restoration target. A vast majority of the physical characteristics were similar between quarry floors and alvars. Approximately 15% of the lichen, bryophyte and vascular plant species were growing in both habitats. Approximately 12% of the species that were growing in both habitats were either characteristic of or endemic to alvar habitat. Several restoration methods for current or future quarry floor site plans are provided using alvars as the restoration target.
