This ethnographic study examines the role of religion in the identity formation of young Africans in the Midwest. Two women and three men, between the ages of 20 and 30, participated in the study. The study focuses on four questions. Who are the young people that attend House of God, a Pentecostal/charismatic church? What attracts them to and keeps them in the church? What, if any, identity struggles do they experience? And, what is the role of the church in the identity negotiations of the young adult members?

The young adults in this study are undergoing the process of identity formation. The church promotes an identity it hopes will help the youths succeed in the new environment. House of God strives to support its young members culturally, socially, and spiritually. Additionally, the church is a site of complex identity negotiations as the young immigrants and the church attempt to create a space in which the youths can develop a strong sense of self while achieving upward mobility in their lives outside the church.
