Large performance-based secondary school music programs are often challenged to achieve high standards of student learning and performance because small-group and individualized instruction are not provided in their school districts. This study examined the effects of team teaching upon the large school choral performance group. Participants included 123 choral students in Grades 10-12 from a single secondary suburban school located in the northeast United States. A concurrent triangulated mixed methods case study was conducted using pre-post surveys, interviews, and observations to confirm, cross-validate, or corroborate findings within the study. Quantitative data were analyzed using a paired samples t-test. Qualitative data were coded using inductive analysis to identify categories that emerged from the findings using the initial categories of vocal technique, classroom management, and team teaching based upon the literature review. Additional categories that emerged were included in the data analysis. The findings reveal the addition of the second teacher did enhance vocal technique and group performance in the large secondary choral setting. Students demonstrated improvement in all aspects of vocal technique and group performance. Six themes that had an effect upon learning in the classroom also emerged during the course of the study including student response to the second teacher in the classroom; leadership within the classroom; discipline within the classroom; sectional rehearsals; confidence of students; and understanding vocal technique. Public concerts showed overall group improvement, which resulted in a positive community attitude toward the school district. The connection between school and community is of the utmost importance in fostering academic excellence in our schools and adding to the cultural enrichment of our society.Subjects--Topical Terms:
