Postcolonial literatures are rewritings of colonial images. To provide a credible and legitimate image of their own past, postcolonial literatures draw upon the tropes and vocabulary of the colonizer. The colonial/orientalist discourse structures the frameworks of the postcolonial response. The clear separation then between postcolonial literatures and orientalism is suspect since it overlooks the influence of the image on the counter-image.

Although orientalism provides an image of the Orient, it is not a monolithic discourse that prevents challenges to it from within the genre. Edward Said's Orientalism is a founding text in the criticism of orientalism but it fails to see unconventional orientalists, whose portrayal of the Orient poses challenges to the styles and techniques of classical orientalism. These two schools of orientalism, classical and unconventional, are separated by typological lines, not chronological or historical ones.

How orientalism, both the classical and the unconventional types, is influential in the thought of Modern Arab thinkers is the objective of this study. The first generation that established the East-West discourse imitated the notion of modernizing the Orient, a concept that inherently carries a vision of the Orient similar to that proposed by the orientalists. The succeeding generation of writers developed these ideas and proposed certain cultural programs in order to "reform" the Orient. Again, this reform is based on a conception of the Orient based on orientalist images. The late contemporary authors problematized this reading of the Orient by invalidating the East-West binary opposition, and providing more "hybrid" readings of the Orient. Though still based on certain orientalist concepts, the ideas of the late contemporary writers, such as Mahfouz, Haqi, and Salih, are sophisticated enough to render their analysis of the East-West question more intellectually appealing than the earlier generations.

The postcolonial counter-image carries within it the seeds of the very discourse it tries to refute. No reply can evade the premise of the question. The original statement constitutes the structure, manner, and style of the reply. No counter-image, therefore, can escape the foundations of the original image.
