Thesis (Ph.D.)--Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, 2006.
This dissertation reconstructs and analyzes the Clement of Alexandria's Gospels of Matthew and John as found in his writings. Having gathered the raw data from critical editions of Clement's writings, each portion of one of the Gospels is collated against the Nestle-Aland Novum Testament Graece (27th edition) and the United Bible Society's Greek New Testament (4th edition) as the primary control witnesses. Following this seminal collation, each point receives categorization to assist in clarifying its proximity to the two primary control witness. This categorization employs three levels: citation, adaptation, and allusion. Once categorized, points of variation from the primary control witnesses are further collated against a series of control witnesses of known text-type for the purpose of clarifying Clement's text-type.

In Chapter One, the need for a reconstructive work is demonstrated, as well as a justification for such a work on the writings of Clement of Alexandria. A brief biography of Clement is included as well as remarks concerning his contributions and chronology.

Chapter Two sets forth Clement of Alexandria's citations, adaptations and allusions from the Gospel of Matthew as collated against the Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament. Variations from the control witnesses are designated below each reading. Clement's singular readings are included. Chapter Three sets forth Clement of Alexandria's citations, adaptations and allusions from the Gospel of John as collated against the Nestle-Aland Greek New Testament. Variations from the control witnesses are designated below each reading. Clement's singular readings are included.

Chapter Four evaluates the raw data from the previous two chapters by means of two analytical methods: a Quantitative profile and a series of Group profiles. By means of these methods, Clement's final text-type is ascertained to be Caesarean with Western and Alexandrian influences.

Chapter Five concludes this work with the assertion that Clement's text-type is Caesarean with influences from several other text-types. While this is different from the expected outcome of Alexandrian text-type, such a conclusion demonstrates the fluid nature of the early text and the lack of definition among text-types.
