Following the four R's (Reducing, Reusing, Reclaiming, and Recycling), the design of a textile product will embody environmental as well as ecological and economical aspects. The four R's are a guideline which ultimately extend the lifetime of a textile product and include proper disposal and appropriate use of its waste remainders.

Besides the management activities which make it possible to achieve better use of waste, consumers and their growing social and ethical mindsets concerning the environment are driving forces as well.

Technically, waste management in textiles has to be divided into procedures related to textile process-waste materials and post-consumer textile waste. Process-waste includes all waste generated during textile production up to the stage where a final product is formed. Process-waste is usually recycled or reclaimed. Post-consumer waste describes used textile goods ready for disposal. The biggest accumulators for post-consumer textile waste are the carpet, automotive, disposable nonwovens, and apparel industries. There are operational challenges and quality issues related to both waste forms, as the origin and construction of the material can be of multiple components. The technical ability to handle the variety of textile waste is an important factor in successful transformation into raw material. In the case of PET bottles, the textile industry makes use of a high value artificial post-consumer waste product by altering it into polyester yarns.

The objective of the experimental case study research was to utilize spandex waste fiber in textile products. Several concepts were evaluated, and after a series of trials two concepts were employed for further experimental work. The completed experimental work focused on the development of nonwoven fabrics using 100% spandex waste and polypropylene fibers blended with spandex waste fibers. The sequence of processes for this research started with developing a cutting and opening procedure for the different spandex waste forms. This procedure was followed by finding the best suitable web forming and bonding method. From designated process steps, samples were taken to evaluate quantitative fiber content, temperature behavior, fiber distribution, and flexural rigidity. The final fabrics underwent tensile testing, and those results were statistically analyzed using the t-test. Results showed that different PP/spandex blend fabrics did not contribute to an improvement of performances compared to a 100% PP control web. (Abstract shortened by UMI.)
