Thesis (M.A.)--Carleton University (Canada), 2006.

The focus of this work is contemporary North American tattooing practices. Specifically the phenomenon explored is how individuals personalise the meaning of tattoo images through personal narratives, regardless of the cultural origins of the symbols. A brief history of tattooing is included in order to give context to the current practice and explore those social issues which have affected the practice in the past. Theoretically, Maurice Merleau-Ponty's notion of the flesh is used as a foundation in order to further explore current understandings of the body. Original ethnographic material collected, gives personalised narratives of tattoo practices, which is then analysed using historical and theoretical understandings.
