Point and Level Systems (PL Systems) are a behavior modification tool used in residential and day programs for at-risk children. The literature on PL Systems is inconclusive as to whether they are helpful and the majority of this literature is anecdotal or qualitative in nature. I explore and develop hypotheses about four areas of influence on PL System performance: programmatic factors, demographics, family dysfunction, and psychological functioning. Hierarchical Linear Modeling techniques are used to examine a pre-existing dataset from the Clearview School. In order to better interpret the statistical analysis a second methodology of interpretive focus groups is used. I find that programmatic factors have the largest effect on PL System performance. I conclude by indicating implications for future research as well as policy and practice.
