The research questions for this study were "What tools are currently used for assessment in band programs in public high schools?"; "Who performs the assessments?"; "Is there a distinction between assessment and grading?"; and "Is the process accepted by all constituencies?" These issues are important to address as they are the responsibility of ensemble directors.

A survey was distributed to a random sample of 500 high school band directors from the Eastern Region of Music Educators National Conference (National Association for Music Education). Participation was voluntary; response rate was statistically significant, with 158 usable responses (75 were required to produce a valid survey).

The survey produced data on whether grades were used and what reporting systems were used. Data were collected based on whether and to what extent the following criteria were incorporated: technical proficiency, use of writing, utilization of rubrics, student involvement in the process, prioritization of the elements, and inclusion into the students' permanent high school record. Basic demographic data were collected to determine if a correlation existed between the data and the assessment procedures used.

The second phase of the study involved on-site visits, phone conversations, and email correspondence with directors whose responses warranted further exploration. Directors who provided contact information were selected for this phase based on responses which were deemed unique.

The data indicated some degree of consistency among high school band directors regarding types of material used for assessment, the manner in which assessments were performed, and the calculation and conversion used to assign grades. Other areas of data collection resulted in less agreement among participants about acceptability, satisfaction, and efficacy of the system used.

An Excel spreadsheet was used to record the data and draw comparisons between the survey questions and responses. Data relating to individual questions were added for clarity and integrity of results.

It was found that while high school band directors did generally agree on assessment strategies, considerable and regular modifications continue to occur as the profession searches for the ideal method to assess its students.
