The problem. This study examined the relationship among environmental turbulence, strategic behavior, and competitive posture on the performance of United States state and federally chartered credit unions. This study further examined the use of strategy, general management and functional capabilities, and strategic investments as they are aligned with strategic aggressiveness of not-for-profit (NFP) credit unions (CU) to maximize performance. The study examined the effects of the rules of the game on CUs to remain competitive in the financial services industry (FSI) in the United States.Subjects--Topical Terms:

Method. A descriptive correlation study was conducted using a framework of several research areas: strategic behavior, competitive posture, and strategic aggressiveness. These variables were measured with observed and required levels of environmental turbulence to measure optimal performance in credit unions.

Results. Significant relationships were found among strategy gap, general management gap, functional management gap, strategic investment gap, and competitive responsiveness gap of not-for-profit credit unions. This study provided empirical evidence on the relationships among environmental turbulence, strategic behavior, competitive posture, strategic aggressiveness, and performance. The following are research findings: (1) Empirically validated significant correlation among environmental turbulence, strategic behavior, and CU performance. (2) Additional empirical support of Ansoff's Strategic Success Hypothesis. (3) Modification of the Strategic Success Hypothesis to include competitive posture, responsiveness, and strategic behavior of not for profit financial services entities. (4) Development of a framework representing an emerging theoretical perspective of harmonious coexistence of competitive posture and strategic behavior in not for profits.

This study provides empirical support that a not-for-profit entity generates revenue through transactional income and that the application of market strategy, general management capabilities, functional management capability, and strategic investments has a relative correlation to credit union financial performance and performance attributes. In addition, credit unions that align their competitive posture and strategic aggressiveness to the turbulence in the environment optimize performance.
