Thesis (M.A.)--University of Colorado at Boulder, 2007.
In this thesis I argue that Germaine de Stael uses ekphrasis and questions of framing in Corinne, or Italy (1807) to engage in the ut picture poesis debates of her time. I investigate the connection between her aesthetic juxtapositions and the way she uses them to critique gender dynamics, the construction of national identity, and imperialistic expansion. De Stael associates her innocent young protagonist, Lucile Edgermond, with the static space of painting, while contrasting her inertia with Corinne's ever moving passion, genius, and spontaneous poetic talents. Similarly, in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), Mary Wollstonecraft compels us to reexamine the interplay between sound images and their linguistic signs as she reveals the degraded state of phraseology and the ekphrastic images male philosophers, poets and female conduct writers employ to forge notions of feminine identity. Thus, just as Wollstonecraft asks us to reconsider the manipulation of language, so too does de Stael invite us to re-evaluate the relationship between narrative and visual space in the context of gendered identities.Subjects--Topical Terms:
