The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of the digital music stand on middle school instrumental music sight-reading.

Subjects consisted of twenty-five seventh and eighth-grade music students randomly selected from one Hawaii intermediate school. Sight-reading was evaluated using the Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale. Students viewed the Watkins-Farnum Performance Scale Form A as paper, and Form B as a scanned image using the Freehand Systems MusicPad Pro in a random presentation order.

The research null hypothesis stated there would be no significant differences between the sight-reading scores of instrumental students when presenting music on a digital music stand verses printed music. Based on the data obtained, the null hypothesis failed to be rejected (t = -1.70, df = 24, p = 0.10). Students exhibited no noticeable difference when sight-reading music on the digital music stand versus traditional paper notation. The small sample size limited this study. Further research is needed with a larger and more diverse sample, to better determine correlations regarding music reading ability using paper notation versus digital music stands.
