This study investigated humor in relation to anxiety, depression, and stress in a sample of college students. The Humor Styles Questionnaire (HSQ) is a recently developed humor measure based on a multidimensional definition of sense of humor. The HSQ measures four dimensions of humor; two are though to be adaptive while two are thought to be maladaptive. Literature suggests that one's ability to use their humor to facilitate coping may depend on which of these humor styles they demonstrate. A secondary aim of the study was to determine if the HSQ was valid for use with a Latino/a college student population.

A convenience sample of 250 undergraduates was asked to complete an online survey. The survey was comprised of the HSQ, as well as measures of depression, anxiety, stress, and a demographic sheet. A correlational design was employed to determine if adaptive humor styles were associated with lower levels of depression, anxiety, and stress and, conversely, if maladaptive humor styles were associated with higher levels of depression, anxiety, and stress. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis were computed for the Latino/a sample. Factor analysis was subsequently computed for the Anglo sample as an added validity check.

The results of the present study, indicated that type of humor style, adaptive or maladaptive, does bear some relationship to psychological well-being. Though significant correlations existed between humor style and psychological well-being, the relationships were weak. The four-factor structure was not confirmed in the sample of Latino/a or Anglo students.

This research adds to previous research on humor and psychological well-being. The specific focus of this study on different humor styles makes it one of only a few to date that look at specific dimensions of humor as they relate to well-being. Results of this study may be useful for counselors, administrators, and faculty in helping them to better understand how college students cope.
