The purpose of this paper is to examine the connection between the experience of immigrants in early 19th century America in association with their desire to join the American Army during the U.S.-Mexican War to the formation of the San Patricio Battalion, which was a unit in the Mexican Army that was composed of immigrant deserters from the United States Army.

It will also prove that contrary to the opinions of some historians, there is much research left to be done concerning the history of the San Patricios, as the reasons for their desertion is a reminder of the hostilities that confronted immigrants in a nativist society in 19 th century America.
