This visual content analysis compares the photographic coverage of China and the United States in the newspaper of each country. Findings indicate that business, politics and social issues are dominant topics in the visual coverage of China by U.S. newspapers, which reflect three major frames: a rising China, a communist China and China as a threat. While it is shown that U.S. foreign affairs are often covered in a "hegemonic" frame by Chinese media, this study surprisingly finds that entertainment and human-interest topics about the United States prevail over other topics such as politics, business and science and technology. "Materialistic America" and "funny Americans" are the most prominent visual frames about the U.S. shown in Chinese newspapers.
